The physical activity and community health course starts tomorrow at OOA
The physical activity and community health course, organized by the Oman Olympic Academy (OOA), will start tomorrow morning, “Monday,” and will continue until next Wednesday, as part of the Academy’s interest in engaging all groups, including specialists and workers in the health and physical fields.
The establishment of this course is due to the increasing incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases), which are the leading cause of death in the world, with physical inactivity being the fourth leading risk factor for premature death globally. During the course, the importance of physical activity and the significant positive impact on the health of the individual in the long run will be highlighted, as it has become necessary to train and qualify a number of candidates from relevant sectors in all governorates of Oman to deliver the correct information, guide and motivate community members and carry out interventions that contribute in increasing the number of physical activity practitioners in Oman.
The course aims to understand the relationship between physical activity and the health of community members, to identify the benefits of healthy and unhealthy physical activity, and to know the best investments to enhance physical activity. It also aims to propose interventions to enhance the practice of physical activity and familiarity with the prevalence rates of physical inactivity in Oman and the world. Additionally, it identifies the global recommendations for its practice according to age groups as well as the challenges that prevent its practice, and developing a short-term action plan for some interventions that enhance physical activity, each according to its specialization.
The course will be presented by Dr. Huda bint Khalfan Al Siyabi, Senior Consultant in Public Health – Director of the Community Health Initiatives Department at the Ministry of Health. The course targets a number of candidates from various relevant authorities, including Sultan Qaboos University, Oman Olympic Committee, and Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and others.
The course includes many axes, as concepts about physical activity, its benefits, challenges that prevent physical activity, and ways to enhance physical activity through knowledge of the role of the individual and the role of institutions will be addressed, in addition to the lack of physical activity as a risk factor for non-communicable diseases. WHO recommendations for age-appropriate physical activity, and best investments to promote physical activity in the community.
