Oman Weightlifting and Physical Strength Sports Committee
Committee Goals and Overview:
The committee aims to promote weightlifting across Oman, as this sport is one of the oldest and most beneficial for the human body, developing all body muscles. It is supported by international and Olympic federations, providing significant facilities such as barbells and weights for daily training. The sport is divided into two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. Weightlifting also has global and Olympic championships, while strength sports include three categories: the squat, bench press, and deadlift, which have Asian and global championships.

Participation:
The national weightlifting team participated in its first championship at the GCC level during the Open Championship in the UAE, held on March 22-23, 2000, in Dubai. Alongside Oman, athletes from several countries participated (Egypt, Lebanon, India, and the UAE). The Oman weightlifting team secured first place among the competing teams, winning the first-place trophy.
Oman also won a silver medal at the Arab Club Weightlifting Championship in Syria in December 2010, and achieved a silver and a bronze medal at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Kazakhstan in September 2012. Between 2003 and 2008, Oman garnered numerous silver and gold medals in strength sports during its international competitions, with a total of 47 gold and 58 silver medals by 2008.
Hosting Championships:
– Oman Weightlifting and Physical Strength Committee hosted the 11th Arab Bodybuilding Championship for men and the 10th for youth in April 2006, with participation from over 13 Arab countries and 250 contestants. Oman finished third in the men’s category in this championship.
– The committee also hosted the eighth GCC Championship for men and the seventh for youth in weightlifting in July 2008. The event was noted for its excellent organization, as reported by participating delegations and various media outlets. This championship was also significant for being the first to implement doping tests, with Oman finishing third in both men’s and youth categories.
The committee continued to host significant events, including the Asian Powerlifting Championship (bench press) from October 2-6, 2015, at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, with participation from 12 countries alongside Oman.
Achievements of Committee:
The national team has achieved numerous sporting accomplishments in Gulf, Arab, Asian, and international championships. Notably, they secured a silver medal at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Kazakhstan, competing against several Asian nations with extensive sports history. The national strength sports team has won 36 medals, including a bronze medal at the World Junior Powerlifting Championship held in Poland.
Future Vision:
The committee has initiated a vision for current athletes, assessing their capabilities and developing a four-year plan known as the Olympic Athlete Project. This aims to prepare current athletes for the Tokyo Olympics, contingent upon their adherence to the coach’s outlined plan. Significant effort is required from both the committee and the ministry, as the committee cannot achieve this alone. The project has been presented to the relevant authorities within the ministry.
