OOC General Assembly Confirms Election Date in April and Approves Electoral Committees
The General Assembly of Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) convened on Sunday at the JW Marriott Hotel and approved the date for the upcoming elections for the 2024–2028 electoral cycle, scheduled for April 22, 2025. The meeting was chaired by Khalid bin Mohammed Al Zubair, OOC President, who emphasized in his opening remarks that the gathering was part of the preparations for the upcoming elections of OOC Board of Directors. He noted that the meeting focused on two key items that reflect the Board’s commitment to upholding integrity and transparency in the electoral process: the approval of the electoral committees and the endorsement of minor amendments to the election regulations to enhance their clarity and effectiveness as a sustainable regulatory framework.
In his address, Al Zubair stated:
“Your attendance at this important meeting reflects our shared commitment to strengthening the role of the General Assembly, which serves as the basis of Omani Olympic movement. On this occasion, I would like to commend your invaluable support and active participation, which has played a fundamental role in advancing the institutional framework of sports governance.”
He further highlighted the achievements of Omani athletes in various sporting events, acknowledging their dedication and perseverance in raising Oman’s profile on regional and international platforms. Despite well-known challenges, these accomplishments exemplify the resilience of Omani athletes and their commitment to embodying the Olympic spirit and its noble values.
OOC President also underscored the strong collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth, OOC, sports federations, and various stakeholders, describing it as a cornerstone for realizing a comprehensive vision for the development and sustainability of Omani sports.
Al Zubair extended his profound gratitude to His Highness Sayyid Thi Yazin bin Haitham, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth, for his unwavering commitment to advancing institutional governance and enhancing its frameworks, paving the way for achieving shared aspirations and elevating Omani sports on national, continental, and international levels. He also expressed appreciation to the General Assembly members for their continuous trust and support and thanked media representatives for their efforts in covering the activities and events of OOC over the years.
In closing, Al Zubair stated:
“We extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for his generous support and wise guidance, which serve as our roadmap toward a sustainable and progressive sports renaissance.”
Following this, the General Assembly members reviewed the meeting’s agenda, approving the revised election regulations and the electoral committees, which consist of the Elections Committee and the Appeals Committee.
The Elections Committee will be chaired by Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed Al Hadhrami, with members including Mohammed bin Saif Al Rashdi, Nasser bin Suleiman Al Zaidi, Ismail bin Hamad Al Hinai, and Ahmed bin Hamad Al Mahmoudi.
The Appeals Committee will be led by Sheikh Abdulwahab bin Abdullah Al Hinai, with members including Hajar bint Qambar Al Ajmiya and Jamal bin Salem Al Nabhani.
OOC Board of Directors Holds First Meeting of 2025
Separately, OOC Board of Directors held its first meeting of the year on Sunday, presided over by Khalid bin Mohammed Al Zubair. The meeting commenced with a welcoming address, followed by discussions on key agenda items, including the approval of the minutes of the previous Board meeting held on September 11, 2024, the review of the final accounts for the fiscal year 2024, the auditors’ report, and the 2025 budget.
Board members also reviewed the annual report of OOC, which included administrative and financial updates as well as a summary of activities and events held in 2024. Among the key domestic events organized were:
- The GCC Women’s Sports Hackathon
- The Women & Sports Dialogue Session (organized in collaboration with the French Embassy in Oman)
- The Athletes’ Forum, held in South and North Al Batinah and Al Buraimi, bringing together athletes from various federations and sports committees
- The Hiking for an Active Society and Sustainable Health event in Salalah, Dhofar Governorate
- The Physical Activity and Health Awareness Workshop, conducted in Muscat, Dhofar, and Al Dakhiliyah
- The 2024 Olympic Day, which saw the participation of over 300 students from various schools in Muscat Governorate
The report also detailed major decisions made by the Board and the Executive Office, training programs organized by Oman Olympic Academy, and the activities of Board-affiliated committees. Additionally, it covered the outcomes of Oman’s participation in international sporting events, including:
- The First GCC Youth Games, held in UAE from April 16 to May 2, 2024
- The 33rd Summer Olympic Games (Paris 2024), held in France from July 26 to August 11, 2024
Approval of 2025 Programs and Events
The Board also approved the OOC’s programs and events for 2025, with key international participations including:
- The 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain
- The 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia
- The 1st West Asian Youth Games in Iraq
On the domestic front, the Board reviewed upcoming internal events, including Olympic Day, programs under Oman Olympic Academy, and various sports, awareness, and social initiatives planned within the framework of Sub-committees.
Updates on Muscat 2025 GCC Beach Games
The Board discussed the latest developments regarding the 3rd GCC Beach Games, scheduled to be held in Muscat from April 5 to April 11, 2025. Discussions covered the approved sports, competition schedules, venues, technical, logistical, media, and administrative aspects, as well as regulatory frameworks.
The Board approved the appointment of Ahmed bin Faisal Al Jahdhami as Head of Omani delegation participating in the event, along with the selection of administrative officials for the delegation. Additionally, members reviewed updates on Oman Olympic Museum development project.
The meeting concluded with a review of incoming reports and correspondence, followed by discussions on new business items, with necessary decisions taken accordingly.
