In alignment with the national directions of the Sultanate of Oman and the framework of the Oman Olympic Committee—and consistent with the principles adopted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Sport and Environment Commission, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)—and in coordination with the Secretary General, the Chief Executive Officer, and the Department of Supporting Committees, the Committee undertakes the following roles and responsibilities:
-
Promoting the culture of environmental protection and sustainable development as the third pillar of the Olympic philosophy—alongside sport and culture—through national awareness and educational programs and initiatives, and submitting periodic reports on these activities to the Secretary General.
-
Preparing a comprehensive national plan for sport and the environment in coordination with federations, supporting committees, and relevant national entities, to attract and organize environmentally related sports events, leveraging Oman’s diverse geography (such as beach sports, mountain climbing, desert sports, and others).
-
Integrating environmental considerations into national and international sports events and activities, ensuring the application of sustainability principles in coordination with the Secretary General and the CEO.
-
Reviewing regional and international agreements and conventions related to sport and the environment, and submitting recommendations to the Secretary General via the CEO on mechanisms for their incorporation and implementation within national policies.
-
Enhancing environmental awareness and scientific research in the sports sector, and encouraging academic and field studies that promote the integration of environmental sustainability into sporting practices.
-
Coordinating with the Ministry of Education and relevant entities, through the Secretary General, to incorporate environmental sport concepts and sustainability values into curricula and physical education programs.
-
Fostering international and regional cooperation and knowledge exchange with the IOC Sport and Environment Commission, UNEP, and continental and international sports federations to strengthen Oman’s position in the field of sustainable sport.
-
Encouraging clubs and sports federations to include environmental aspects in their training programs, competitions, and operational plans, and monitoring implementation in coordination with the Secretary General.
-
Proposing national programs for the use of alternative and clean energy in sports facilities to enhance energy efficiency and conserve natural resources, while submitting regular progress reports to the Board of Directors through the Secretary General.
-
Establishing national, regional, and international partnerships and agreements to support the promotion of sustainable sport culture, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors in accordance with established procedures.
-
Proposing Oman’s representation in Gulf, Asian, and international meetings and forums related to sport and the environment, thereby strengthening the external presence of the Oman Olympic Committee and supporting the exchange of expertise and adoption of best practices.
-
Carrying out any additional tasks related to the Committee’s mandate as assigned by the Board of Directors of the Oman Olympic Committee.
-
Engaging experts and specialized entities—preferably national, and when necessary regional or international—after approval by the Secretary General, to ensure efficient and effective implementation of the Committee’s objectives.
