OOC participates in the 36th meeting of GCC NOCs
Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) participated in the 36th meeting of GCC NOCs, which was held yesterday, Wednesday, in the State of Qatar. OOC was represented at the meeting by Khalid bin Mohammed Al Zubair, OOC Chairman, Taha bin Sulaiman Al Kishri, OOC Secretary-General, Lujaina bint Mohsen Al Zaabiya, OCC Board Member and Dr. Mansour bin Sultan Al Touqi, OCC Board Member.
During the meeting, the recommendations submitted by the Executive Office meeting were reviewed, the General Secretariat’s memorandum on developing and enhancing work in the GCC sports system, and the report prepared by the General Secretariat on the executive steps taken by member states to enhance the capabilities of GCC NOCs and empower them to ensure their continuity. In developing the GCC sports work system, achieving the aspirations and hopes of athletes in the GCC countries, and providing an environment that stimulates them to create, develop and excel; The total number of programs that will be organized during this year has reached 43 programs in all sports disciplines. It was agreed to hold more specialized courses and workshops in the sports field, with greater opportunity for citizens of the GCC to participate in these courses, and for the GCC NOCs to provide the General Secretariat with the timetable for next year 2025, which includes training courses, conferences, workshops and specialized events in the field. GCC NOCS also briefed on the recommendation regarding joint GCC sports action. The secretariat received requests to host 13 Gulf sports championships for the year 2024, and GCC NOCs appreciated the efforts made by NOCs and sports federations for various sports in order to enhance joint GCC sports activity. It was agreed that GCC NOCs would provide the General Secretariat with courses, GCC sports championships that NOCs and sports federations intend to host during the next year 2025.
The Council reviewed the memorandum of the General Secretariat regarding the meeting of the working group to study the conditions of the NOCs and work teams affiliated with GCC NOCs Presidents, and the recommendations that came out of the meeting. The formation of the Planning, Coordination and Follow-up Committee was approved, and it consists of candidates from countries and members with experience and competence in the sports field. The tasks and responsibilities of the committee were also approved, with the Executive Office being assigned to follow up, supervise and approve the results of the outputs of the committees and work teams affiliated with the Council of NOCs Presidents.
GCC NOCs on the recommendation of the Executive Office and the memorandum of the General Secretariat regarding international cooperation and partnerships with brotherly and friendly countries and international organizations specialized in the sports field, and on the current reality of joint GCC sports activity, in which the focus is limited only to organizing combined GCC sports tournaments. Every year, a sports tournament is held, represented by the General Sports Games, the Youth Sports Games, the Beach Sports Games, and the Gymnasium and Martial Arts Games, with varying activity in holding sports courses and specialized workshops in the sports field. The Council recommended that the Planning, Coordination and Follow-up Committee study the most appropriate aspects of international cooperation in the coming period.
The recommendation of the Executive Office and the memorandum of the General Secretariat regarding the results of the work of the meeting of the working group to review the draft regulation of the GCC Sports Games were also reviewed, and it was approved, with the name changed to the regulation organizing sports tournaments in GCC, to include all four combined GCC sports tournaments. Approved at the ninety-second Executive Office meeting held in the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2021, and any of the sessions that may arise in the future.
The Council extended its thanks and appreciation to the United Arab Emirates for the distinguished efforts it made towards the success of the first GCC Sports Games for Youth, which was held during the period from April 16 to May 2, 2024. The General Secretariat’s memorandum was reviewed regarding the final report of the session and the review it included of all… Data, information and challenges related to them, and the Council decided to assign the Planning, Coordination and Follow-up Committee to study the challenges and recommendations and take the necessary measures regarding them.
GCC NOCs, approved the request of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee to cancel the 1st edition of the GCC Games for Indoor and Martial Arts, which was scheduled to be held in the last quarter of this year. Due to the busyness of regional and international sports events during this year, they will be organized in the coming years upon the request of one of the member states to host them, taking into account that the date of their holding does not conflict with one of the approved GCC sports tournaments until the year 2027.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Council agreed to hold the 37th meeting GCC Presidents in the Council countries, on May 6, 2025, and a meeting of the preparatory executive office for it on May 5, 2025 in the State of Kuwait.
On the other hand, Taha bin Sulaiman Al-Kishri, OOC Secretary-General, and Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Rahbi, Executive Director, participated in the meeting of NOCs of West Asian countries, which was held in the capital, Doha, the day before yesterday. The activities report of the Olympic Council of Asia was discussed, the latest ongoing preparations for holding the upcoming Asian Games were reviewed, and the upcoming sporting events for West Asian countries were discussed.
