Scientific themes and rich discussions at the Sports Medicine Symposium organized OOC
Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), represented by Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, in cooperation with Oman International Hospital, organized a sports medicine symposium yesterday morning, “Monday, under the patronage of the retired athlete Ali bin Abdullah Al Habsi and in the presence of Khalid bin Muhammad Al Zubair, OOC President, and Taha bin Suleiman Al Koshary, OOC Secretary General and a number of board members, members of Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, members of sports federations and committees, physiotherapists, physical therapists, physical trainers, and cadres working in the relevant authorities.
The importance of the symposium comes in light of the large number of sports injuries in Oman and international stadiums, especially with regard to cases of sudden cardiac arrest for athletes, and the emergence of the importance of having paramedics in the stadiums to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation urgently and in a scientific way that will restore the heart’s work again.
The symposium aims to raise awareness of the importance of having trained staff in stadiums for all kinds of sports practiced in Oman, as well as the importance of medical examination for players of different ages, in addition to shedding light on the specialization of sports medicine, which is one of the important medical specialties for different sports, and introducing the medical services that must The practitioner of sports medicine must master it, and it includes a set of preventive measures such as injury prevention and adaptation, in addition to multiple treatments such as orthopedic treatment, physical rehabilitation, injections, and others.
A number of doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists attended the symposium, where many topics were discussed, the most important of which are common sports injuries, doping and the importance of raising awareness among young people in this field, as well as the effects resulting from exposure to sunlight and excessive heat during exercise and how to prevent them and the rehabilitation for various sports injuries, and practical applications of cardiopulmonary resuscitation were also made.
At the beginning of the symposium, Marcelo Pereira, CEO of Oman International Hospital, gave a welcoming speech in which he welcomed the sponsor of the ceremony, the head of the committee and the audience, thanking them for their participation and stressing the importance of this symposium given the increasing cases of sports injuries in international stadiums in general and in particular in Oman stadiums.
Dr. Masoud Al Riyami, Chairman of Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, gave an opening speech in which he stressed the importance of sports medicine and its role in diagnosing and treating all injuries that occur to the musculoskeletal system, injuries to bones, muscles and joints, and instructions and instructions to avoid sports injuries and ensure a better sports life for players. He hoped that this symposium would produce recommendations that would benefit sports in general, and sports medicine in particular.
A visual presentation was presented about the centers of excellence at Oman International Hospital, and an introductory tour of the hospital’s medical departments.
After that, Dr. Sulaiman Al Maawali, Vice Chairman of the Committee, and nurses Khadija Al Busafia and Tahira Al Zadjali gave a lecture on cardiopulmonary resuscitation in sports stadiums, during which they discussed the definition of sudden cardiac arrest, the main signs of cardiac arrest, and the steps by which CPR is performed. Through a direct practical application.
Then the scientific sessions of the symposium began; where the first working paper was presented by Dr. Masoud Al Riyami, during which he touched on common sports injuries, and the relationship between the player’s age and injury. The doctor also focused on injuries that occur in the joints such as the shoulder and knee and how to treat them, and the importance of early diagnosis of injury.
Shuaib Al Zadjali, a member of Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, presented the second working paper on anti-doping in the field of sport, during which he touched on the history of doping, the reasons for its prohibition, doping control and its regulators, the stages of doping control, the financial evaluation of control and possible alternatives, and awareness of the dangers of stimulants.
The second scientific session included two working papers, where Majid Al-Wardi, a member of the committee, presented a working paper on exposure to heat and sun in sports activities, the physiology of body temperature regulation, injuries resulting from high temperatures and treatment of heat stress. Dr. Muhammad Younis, Director of the Medical Rehabilitation Department at Oman International Hospital, also discussed in the second working paper the orthopedic treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries. After the two sessions ended, the discussion was opened with the attendees and certificates were handed over to the participants in the symposium.
